Railroad Grade Crossings - Participant Guidebook Page 56 • Drivers must stop at least 15 feet from the tracks, but no more than 50 feet away. • It is against the law to drive around or under a crossing gate, either down or being opened or closed. The ban covers tablet computers as well as mobile phones, but excludes using a talk-to-text feature. • In regards to texting and driving, the first violation is a non-moving offense with no points assessed to the driver's record. The second violation is a moving violation with three points assessed to the driver's record. Safe Following Distance - Participant Guidebook Page 64 • The driver of a motor vehicle shall follow another vehicle at a reasonable and prudent distance, while regarding the speed of other vehicles and the condition of the highway. In Florida, four seconds is the recommended following distance. Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Drivers must use turn signals to signal their intention to turn at least 100 feet from the beginning of the turn. • Drivers must not block an intersection when turning left. • Drivers must pay attention to "No Turn On Red" or "Stop Here" signs when pedestrians are present/crossing. • Drivers making a right turn must make the turn as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway. • Drivers making a left turn must approach from the extreme left-hand lane and turn into lane lawfully available to traffic moving in the direction upon the roadway being entered. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers merging onto a highway shall signal and increase speed in the acceleration lane. • Drivers must yield the right-of-way to traffic on the highway. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • To park in these designated spaces, a person needs to obtain a parking placard or obtain a specialty license plate authorized to park in the reserved spaces. • Vehicles displaying a disabled parking permit or license plate are allowed to park for free up to 4 hours in any on-street metered space, unless signage posted restricts the time to park.
