Page 3 of 4 AARP Driver Safety Smart Driver™ Course State-Specific Information D20699 – May 2024 MINNESOTA Drivers must yield the right-of-way to traffic on the highway which is close enough to constitute a hazard. Driver's approaching stopped traffic and/or emergency vehicles on the side of the road should move one lane away from this traffic whenever possible. If it is not possible to move a lane over, the driver should carefully pass this traffic slowly only if it is safe to do so. Traffic entering a freeway must yield to traffic already on the highway. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 Drivers or passengers with disabilities must display either a special license plate or windshield placard to park in designated persons with disabilities parking spaces. A person shall not drive or operate any motor vehicle with any objects (placards) suspended between the driver and the windshield while driving. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 Headlights must be turned on when it is raining, snowing, or sleeting, or when visibility falls below 500 feet. Headlights must be turned on at sunset and used until sunrise. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 When traveling on a road with two or more lanes, drivers must keep over one full lane away from stopped emergency vehicles, stalled/disabled vehicles with flashing lights activated, or if at least one person is visibly present outside the vehicle. Reduce speed if unable to safely move over a lane. Drivers must not follow within 500 feet of an emergency vehicle. Drivers shall yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles approaching from the rear. On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic must yield to the right, clear of any intersection and shall stop. Drivers on a one-way roadway shall drive to the closest edge or curb and stop. Sharing the Road with School Buses – Participant Guidebook Page 82 Must stop at least 20 feet from a stopped school bus when red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended. Drivers are not required to stop for a bus if bus is on the opposite side of a separated roadway. It is illegal to pass on the right side of a school bus while it is displaying red or yellow flashing lights. Sharing the Road with Motorcycles – Participant Guidebook Page 83 Motor vehicles including motorcycles are entitled to the full use of a traffic lane and no motor vehicle may be driven or operated in a manner so as to deprive a motorcycle of the full use of a traffic lane. Sharing the Road with Bicycles – Participant Guidebook Page 84 When passing a bicyclist, the drive must maintain a three-foot clearance. Motorists and bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to each other. Drivers are prohibited from driving in a bike lane except to park or enter or leave a road. This prohibition does not apply when making a turn. Drivers are to yield to bicyclists in roundabouts.
