UNIT 4 – Are We Smart on the Road? How to Avoid Distractions - Participant Guidebook Page 61 • Drivers are no longer able to hold their cell phones in their hands. They will be able to use their phones to make calls, text, listen to music or podcasts and get directions, but only by voice commands or single touch activation without holding the phone. • Hand-held phone use is allowed to obtain emergency assistance. • It is illegal for drivers under age 18 to use a cell phone at any time, whether handheld or hands free. • Illegal to wear headphones or earphones that are used in both ears simultaneously to listen to a radio or other sound-producing device. Safe Following Distance - Participant Guidebook Page 64 • A safe following distance must be reasonable and prudent. This means adjusting your speed to the surrounding traffic, condition of the road and speed of the vehicle you are following. • Minnesota recommends at least a three-second following distance. • Move out of the left-most lane to allow another vehicle to pass when practicable under existing conditions. Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Drivers must signal at least 100 feet before turning. • It is illegal to pass another vehicle within 100 feet of an intersection. • It is illegal to make a right turn on a solid red arrow. • When making a left turn from a two way street to a one way street, driver must turn into the extreme left lane, when available. • When making a right turn, except when indicated otherwise by signs or pavement markings, drivers must make the turn as close as practicable to the right hand curb. • Drivers approaching multi-lane roundabouts must yield to all lanes of traffic already in the roundabout before entering the roundabout.
