U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • U-turns are illegal where other drivers cannot see you from 1,000 feet away (in particular near the tops of hills and on curves). Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers approaching a controlled intersection at the same time shall yield the right-of-way to vehicles to the right. Drivers approaching an uncontrolled intersection with the intent to turn at the same time as other vehicles shall yield to vehicles traveling straight. • Drivers must yield the right-of-way to traffic on the highway which is close enough to constitute a hazard. • Traffic entering a freeway must yield to traffic already on the highway. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • Drivers or passengers with disabilities must display either a special license plate or windshield placard to park in designated persons with disabilities parking spaces. • A person shall not drive or operate any motor vehicle with any objects (placards) suspended between the driver and the windshield while driving. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • When traveling on a road with two or more lanes, drivers must keep over one full lane away from stopped emergency vehicles, stalled/disabled vehicles with flashing lights activated, or if at least one person is visibly present outside the vehicle. Reduce speed if unable to safely move over a lane. • Drivers must not follow within 500 feet of an emergency vehicle. • Drivers shall yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles approaching from the rear. • On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic must yield to the right, clear of any intersection and shall stop. Drivers on a one-way roadway shall drive to the closest edge or curb and stop. Sharing the Road with School Buses – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • Must stop at least 20 feet from a stopped school bus when red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended. • Drivers are not required to stop for a bus if bus is on the opposite side of a separated roadway. • It is illegal to pass on the right side of a school bus while it is displaying red or yellow flashing lights.
