Safe Following Distance - Participant Guidebook Page 64 • Drivers should keep a two-second following distance between themselves and the vehicle in front of them. On highways this should increase to five seconds. • Drivers shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent. Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Signal your turn at least 100 feet ahead on city streets and 300 feet ahead on freeways. • A crosswalk exists at every intersection even if it is not marked. • Proceed when safe and travel at least 150 feet before any lane change. • Multi turn lanes – Steer into the lane corresponding to the one from which the turn was made. Arrive in the same lane you left. • You cannot change lanes in the middle of an intersection. • It is illegal to make right turn on a solid red arrow. • When making a left-hand turn from a two-way street to a one way street (two lane), the driver must turn in to the most extreme left-hand lane available. • It is illegal to make a left turn from a two-way street to a one-way on a solid red light. • It is illegal to turn on red from the inside lane of multiple right turn lanes. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers may not make a U-turn where the vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching in either direction at a distance of 500 feet. • Drivers may not make a U-turn where signs indicate such a maneuver is prohibited. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers shall always yield the right-of-way to vehicles which are close enough to constitute a hazard when entering or exiting a highway. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • Drivers with disabilities or drivers transporting persons with disabilities must display either a special registration plate or placard to park in designated persons with disabilities parking spaces. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 • Headlights are required anytime visibility is less than 1,000 feet. • Studded tires can be used between October 1 and April 30. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic shall yield to the right, clear of any intersection, and shall stop.
