Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic shall yield to the right, clear of any intersection, and shall stop. If an emergency or maintenance vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a freeway with its flashing lights drivers must slow down. If a driver is traveling in the adjacent lane, they must move over one lane. When approaching an ice cream truck displaying flashing lights and extending its stop signal arm and crossing arm, a driver must stop their vehicles at least 10 feet from the front or back of the truck. A driver may proceed past the truck at a reasonable speed, up to 5 mph, and must yield the right-of- way to any pedestrian crossing the road to or from the truck. Sharing the Road with School Buses – Participant Guidebook Page 82 Drivers must stop for a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing whether it is on your side of the road, the opposite side of the road, or at an intersection you are approaching. Drivers must stop at least ten feet from the front or the rear of a school bus. Drivers are not required to stop if the bus is traveling towards you and a median or other physical barrier separates the roadway. Sharing the Road with Motorcycles – Participant Guidebook Page 83 Motorcycles are entitled to the use of a full lane. It is illegal to occupy the same lane as a motorcycle. Sharing the Road with Bicycles – Participant Guidebook Page 84 A bicyclist is considered a "vulnerable user." Drivers must exercise reasonable care when sharing the road with vulnerable users. Failure to do so will result in a fine. When passing a bicyclist, the driver must keep at least 3 feet between them and the bike. If a driver makes a right turn while a cyclist is on their right, they must yield the right-away to the cyclist. If a cyclist reaches an intersection before the driver, the driver must yield the right-away and let them cross. Fines will be doubled for failure to yield right-of-way to a bicycle. Sharing the Road with Pedestrians – Participant Guidebook Page 85 A pedestrian is considered a "vulnerable user." Drivers must exercise reasonable care when sharing the road with vulnerable users. Failure to do so will result in a fine. If a pedestrian is entering, or showing intent to enter a crosswalk (marked or unmarked), the driver must yield by stopping or slowing down. If a driver is making a right turn while a pedestrian is in the crosswalk, they must yield to the pedestrian. When pulling out on to the road, a driver must stop before they cross a sidewalk, even if there are no pedestrians.
