How to Avoid Distractions - Participant Guidebook Page 61 • It is illegal to text while driving. • It is illegal to talk on a handheld mobile device (cell phone) while driving in a construction zone, except for reporting emergencies. • Learner's and intermediate license holders are prohibited from using a cell phone, except for reporting an emergency. • All drivers in Marshfield, Wausau, and Wisconsin Rapids are prohibited from using handheld cell phones. • It is illegal for a driver to use mobile devices within emergency or roadside areas and is subject to fines and punishments upon violation of this law. Emergency or roadside areas are defined as the section of roadway within 500 feet of an authorized emergency vehicle giving a visible signal or a tow truck displaying flashing red lamps.
