U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers may not make a U-turn where the vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching in either direction at a distance of 500 feet. • Drivers may not make a U-turn on a railroad track or railroad grade crossing. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers merging into a continuing lane must signal for at least two seconds prior to changing lanes. • Drivers shall yield the right-of-way to other vehicles traveling in the continuing lane which are close enough to constitute a hazard. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • Only vehicles displaying a permit, and transporting a qualified disabled person, may park in a parking space that is clearly identified as reserved for use by a disabled person. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 • Drivers must turn on their headlights if visibility is less than 1,000 feet. • Drivers may use studded tires during the winter months ranging from October 15 through March 31. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic shall yield to the right, clear of any intersection, and shall stop. • If an emergency vehicle or disabled vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a freeway with its flashing lights on, the driver must provide as much space as practicable. If it is not possible to change lanes, the driver must reduce their speed. • It is illegal to follow an emergency vehicle with its lights and siren on within 500 feet. • It is illegal to stop within 500 feet of a fire vehicle that has stopped to respond to a fire alarm. Sharing the Road with School Buses – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • The driver of a vehicle is not required to stop for a school bus that has its red lights flashing, if traveling in the opposite direction on a highway divided by a median or on a 5-lane highway with a shared center turn lane. • The driver of a vehicle is required to stop for a school bus that has red lights flashing and is traveling in the same direction as the school bus or the opposite direction on an undivided highway of 4 or fewer lanes. Sharing the Road with Motorcycles – Participant Guidebook Page 83 • Drivers are prohibited from sharing a lane with a motorcycle. • Drivers shall not deprive an operator of a motorcycle from the full use of a lane.
