Page 2 of 4 AARP Driver Safety Smart Driver™ Course State-Specific Information D20684 – March 2026NEW DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Drivers must use their turn signal at least 100 feet before making a turn. • It is illegal to pull into an intersection on green and wait to turn left. • When turning left from a two-way street on to a one-way street (two lanes), driver must turn into the most extreme left hand lane available. • It is legal to turn on red from the inside lane of multiple right turn lanes if it safe to do so and there are no signs prohibiting the turn. • It is illegal to make a left turn from a two-way street to a one-way on a solid red light. • It is illegal to make a left turn from a one-way street to another one-way on a solid red light. • It is legal to make a turn across a set of solid double yellow lines. • When turning at an intersection with a bicycle lane, drivers may only enter the bicycle lane within 25 feet of the turn. • When turning at an intersection with a bus lane, drivers may only enter the bus lane at the labeled point in which cars may enter or, in the absence of a labeled point, within 40 feet of the turn. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic shall yield to the right, clear of any intersection, and shall stop. • If an emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a freeway with its flashing lights on, the driver must move to the middle or left lane. If it is not possible to change lanes, the driver must reduce their speed and proceed with caution. • It is illegal to follow an emergency vehicle with its lights and sirens on within 500 feet.
