Safe Following Distance - Participant Guidebook Page 64 • A safe following distance must be reasonable and prudent. This means adjusting your speed to the surrounding traffic, condition of the road, and speed of the vehicle you are following. Alaska recommends a four-second following distance. Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Drivers must use their turn signal at least 100 feet before making a turn. • An officer can ticket a driver for waiting to turn left in an intersection if they are obstructing traffic. • It is legal to make a left turn from a two-way street to a one-way on a solid red light. • It is legal to make a left turn from a one-way street to another one-way on a solid red light. • When turning left from a two-way street to a one-way street, drivers must turn into the most extreme left hand lane available. • It is illegal to make a right turn on a solid red arrow. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers may make a U-turn when it can be done safely and without interfering with other traffic. • Drivers may not make a U-turn when the vehicle cannot be seen by a driver from either direction at a distance of 500 feet. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers should use the acceleration lane to get up to cruising speed before merging into traffic. • Drivers of a vehicle entering a roadway shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching on the roadway that constitute a hazard. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • A special parking permit is required to be displayed in the front windshield of a vehicle and shall be provided special consideration by the public with respect to parking. • A person is not entitled to use the special permit except when providing transportation for a person with a disability. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 • Headlights must be turned on in daytime when visibility is reduced to 1,000 feet or less. • Drivers may not use studded tires or tires with chains from May 1 through September 15 North of 60 North Latitude. • Drivers may not use studded tires or tires with chains from April 15 through September 30 South of 60 North Latitude. • Drivers may not drive a motor vehicle when there is an accumulation of snow/ice or frost on the windshield which obstructs the driver's view.
