Page 3 of 4 AARP Driver Safety Smart Driver™ Course State-Specific Information D20708 – May 2024 NEW YORK • Drivers may make a left turn at a steady red light when turning from a one-way road onto another one-way road but must first come to a full stop and yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. • Turning at a red light in New York City is not allowed unless a sign is posted permitting such a turn. • Drivers must use turn signals to signal their intention to turn at least 100 feet from the beginning of the turn. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers may not make a U-turn where the vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching in either direction at a distance of 500 feet. • Drivers may not make a U-turn in a school zone. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers shall always yield the right-of-way to vehicles which are already on the road in which the driver is merging onto. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • Vehicles must display a valid parking permit to park in spaces for persons with disabilities. • No driver may stop, stand, or park in a handicapped parking area without displaying a valid parking permit. • Vehicles using handicap parking with the proper permit must be in use for the individual named on the permit. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 • Drivers must turn on headlights whenever the conditions require the use of windshield wipers, or when visibility falls below 1,000 feet. Daytime running lights are not considered headlights in this sense. • Studded tires may not be used from May 1 through October 15. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • When drivers encounter an emergency vehicle or hazard stopped or standing on the shoulder of any portion of a highway, with its emergency lights (of any color) activated, drivers must reduce speeds. On parkways, interstates and other controlled access roads with multiple lanes, drivers must move out of the lane nearest to the emergency vehicle, unless prevented from doing so. • Upon the immediate approach of an emergency vehicle, drivers must pull to the right and yield the right-of-way until the vehicle passes. Sharing the Road with School Buses – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • Drivers in all lanes (even if the school bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway) are required to stop for a school bus that has its red lights flashing. • Drivers must stop at least 20 feet from the bus.
