Tires Tires are your direct connection to the road and extremely important for a safe driving experience. Starting, slowing, stopping, and turning all depend on your tires. Proper maintenance will give you the best combination of safety, good fuel mileage, a comfortable ride, and tire longevity. To have the best possible control over your vehicle: X SELECT THE RIGHT TIRE: Select the type of tire that fits your driving conditions and conforms to the recommendations in your owner's manual. X BUY NEWLY MANUFACTURED TIRES: Buy only tires that have been recently manufactured. Tires harden as they age and do not perform as well. X KEEP THE PRESSURE CORRECT: Keeping your tires as close to the recommended pressure as you can will keep you safest. Do not depend on the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) to know when to check your pressures. The TPMS will help you avoid a flat tire, but it may not give you the best tire safety. Your tire pressure changes over time and as the temperature and altitude change. A good rule of thumb is to adjust your tire pressure with each new season, or even monthly. X REPLACE WHEN WORN OUT OR TOO OLD: Trying to get a little more use out of a worn-out or too- old tire could be deadly. X Check for wear bars (small, raised bars) located at the base of the tire's grooves. If these bars are even with the tread, you need new tires. Watch for unusual wear. Learn more about tires, including more about age, pressure, and tread wear in the Vehicle Companion Guide. PROPERLY MAINTAINED TIRES SHOULD WEAR EVENLY. IF YOURS DO NOT, HAVE YOUR MECHANIC CHECK FOR PROBLEMS. www.aarp.org/drive Smart Driver Participant Guidebook 35 ARE WE READY TO DRIVE? 3 1 2 3 5 6 4
