Drowsiness "Fatigue" and "drowsiness" are often used interchangeably, but "drowsiness" is often more dangerous for drivers as it results from sleep impairment, leading to cognitive impairment. This can mean slowed thinking and reaction times. Decisions do not come as quickly and your ability to pay attention to the road is diminished. Driving while drowsy represents a significant risk to fatal or serious vehicle crashes and is attributed to approximately 20% of motor vehicle crashes. Looked but Did Not See (Inattentional Blindness) Inattentional blindness occurs when you do not see something that is in plain sight. You "looked but did not see" the object. X This can happen because you were paying attention to something else at the time. X Sometimes this happens with obvious things that are right in front of you. But you can also miss things that are not that easy to see in the first place. For example, it can be hard to see smaller vehicles like scooters, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians on a busy road. X Do not engage in other activities that make you divide your attention between those activities and driving; your full mental focus should be on the driving task. X Always scan your environment entirely to see and process everything around you, not just other vehicles. ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL SLEEP FOUNDATION, SYMPTOMS OF DROWSINESS WHILE DRIVING MAY INCLUDE: X Impaired reaction time and judgment. X Decreased performance, vigilance, and motivation to continue to your destination. X Trouble focusing and keeping your eyes open or your head up. X Daydreaming and wandering thoughts. X Yawning or rubbing your eyes repeatedly. X Dri ing from your lane, tailgating, driving below the speed limit, and missing signs or exits. X Feeling restless, irritable, or aggressive.
