Safe Following Distance - Participant Guidebook Page 64 • A safe following distance must be reasonable and prudent. Vermont recommends a four-second following distance. Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Drivers must use their turn signal at least 100 feet before making a turn. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers may not make a U-turn where the vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching in either direction at a distance of 500 feet. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers merging into a lane must signal prior to changing lanes. • Drivers shall yield the right-of-way to other vehicles traveling in the continuing lane. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • Vehicles displaying a special license plate or windshield placard may park in a special parking space for individuals with disabilities. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 • Drivers must turn on their headlights if visibility is less than 500 feet. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and/or siren on, all traffic shall pull over to the right side of the road and stop. • If an emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a freeway with its lights and/or siren on, the driver must move to the middle or left lane, if it is safe to do so. If there is only one lane, the driver must slow down. Sharing the Road with School Buses – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • Drivers must stop for school busses that are stopped and discharging school children. • Drivers do not have to stop for a school bus if they are traveling in the opposite direction on a divided highway. Sharing the Road with Bicycles – Participant Guidebook Page 84 • When passing a bicyclist, drivers must maintain a safe distance. • If a driver makes a right turn while a cyclist is on their right, they must yield the right-of-way to the cyclist.
