This means adjusting your speed to the surrounding traffic, condition of the road and speed of the vehicle you are following. South Dakota recommends a four-second following distance. Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Drivers must use their turn signal at least 100 feet before making a turn. • An officer can ticket a driver for waiting to turn left in an intersection if they are obstructing traffic. • When turning left from a two-way street on to a one-way street (two lanes), drivers must turn into the most extreme left-hand lane available. • It is legal to turn on red from the inside lane of multiple right turn lanes if it is safe to do so and there are no signs prohibiting. • It is illegal to make a right turn on a solid red arrow. • It is illegal to make a left turn from a two-way street to a one-way on a solid red light. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers may not make a U-turn unless it can be made safely and without interfering with other traffic. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers entering a highway must yield the right-of-way to all vehicles on the highway. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • Drivers with disabilities must display either a special registration plate or certificate to park in designated persons with disabilities parking spaces. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 • Drivers must turn on their headlights if they are using their windshield wipers. • Drivers must turn on their headlights if visibility is less than 200 feet. • Drivers may use studded tires from October 1 through April 30. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic shall yield to the right, clear of any intersection, and shall stop. • If an emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a freeway with its flashing amber lights on drivers must move over to the farthest lane possible. If the emergency vehicle is flashing red lights, the driver must stop until directed otherwise by emergency personnel or until the driver deems it safe to continue. Sharing the Road with School Buses – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • Drivers must stop not less than 15 feet from a school bus with its red lights flashing. • The driver of a vehicle is not required to stop for a school bus that has its red lights flashing and is stopped in the far right lane on a five-lane undivided highway.
