Page 2 of 3 AARP Driver Safety Smart Driver™ Course State-Specific Information D20709 – March 2026REV NORTH CAROLINA Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Drivers must use their turn signal at least 100 feet before turning. • It is illegal to make a left turn from a two-way to a one-way street at a red light. • It is illegal to make a left turn from a one –way to a one-way street at a red light. • It is legal to turn right from the inside lane of multiple right turn lanes if safe to do so and there are no signs prohibiting it. • It is illegal to make a right turn on a solid red arrow. • An officer can ticket you for waiting in an intersection to turn left if you are obstructing traffic. • When making a left turn from a two-way to a one-way street, drivers should turn into the most extreme left-hand lane available. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers may not make a U-turn where the vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching in either direction at a distance of 500 feet. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers shall always yield the right-of-way to vehicles which are already on the road in which the driver is merging onto. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 • Drivers must decrease speed 5 to 10 miles per hour and increase following distance to four seconds. • Drivers must turn on their headlights if visibility is less than 400 feet. • Drivers may use tire chains of reasonable proportions when required for safety because of snow or ice. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic shall yield to the right, clear of any intersection, and shall stop. • If an emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a freeway with its flashing lights on, the driver must move to the middle or left lane. If it is not possible to change lanes, the driver must reduce their speed and be prepared to stop. Sharing the Road with School Buses – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • Drivers must stop for a school bus that is stopped with red lights flashing. The exception is a driver of a vehicle is not required to stop for a school bus that has its red lights flashing and is stopped on the opposite side on a five-lane undivided highway. • Violation of this requirement will result in a fine. Multiple violations or a violation that results in the death of a person will result in a loss or suspension of the driver's license.
