This means adjusting your speed to the surrounding traffic, condition of the road and speed of the vehicle you are following. • It is recommended to use the three-second rule to determine a safe following distance. Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Drivers must use their turn signal at least 100 feet before turning. • An officer can ticket a driver for waiting to turn left in an intersection if they are obstructing traffic. • When turning left from a two-way street on to a one-way street (two lanes), drivers must turn into the most extreme left-hand lane available. • It is legal to turn on red from the inside lane of multiple right turn lanes if it is safe to do so and there are no signs prohibiting. • It is illegal to make a right turn on a solid red arrow. • It is illegal to make a left turn from a two-way street to a one-way on a solid red light. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers may not make a U-turn where the vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching in either direction at a distance of 500 feet. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers shall always yield the right-of-way to vehicles which are close enough to constitute a hazard. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • Drivers without handicapped placards must not park in the handicapped parking access aisles directly beside handicapped parking stalls. • Drivers with disabilities must display either a special license plate or windshield placard to park in designated persons with disabilities parking spaces. • Drivers who have an impaired ability to walk due to a medical condition are eligible for a placard. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 • Studded tires can only be used from November 1 to April 1. • Drivers must stay at least 100 feet behind snow plows or other maintenance vehicles. • Drivers must turn on their headlights if visibility is less than 500 feet. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic shall yield to the right, clear of any intersection, and shall stop. • If an emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a freeway with its flashing lights on, the driver must move to the middle or left lane. If it is not possible to change lanes, the driver must reduce their speed and be prepared to stop. • It is illegal to follow an emergency vehicle with its lights and sirens on within 500 feet.
