Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • The driver of a vehicle within an intersection intending to turn to the left must yield to a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close thereto as to constitute an immediate hazard, but the driver having so yielded, and having given a signal, may make the left turn; and other vehicles approaching the intersection from the opposite direction must yield to the driver making the left turn. • Drivers must use their turn signal at least 100 feet before making a turn. • When turning left from a two-way street on to a one-way street (two lane), drivers must turn into the most extreme left-hand lane available. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers may not make a U-turn where the vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching in either direction at a distance of 500 feet. • Drivers may not make a U-turn where signs indicate such a maneuver is prohibited. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers must use the entrance ramp to reach the speed of other vehicles. • Drivers shall always yield the right-of-way to vehicles which are close enough to constitute a hazard. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • When using a handicap parking placard or license plate, the person with the disability identification card must be in the vehicle or with the qualified person at all times as proof of disability. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 • Drivers must remove all snow and ice from their vehicles. A motorist is responsible for any ice that flies from a vehicle and causes death, injury, or property damage. • Drivers must use headlights whenever weather conditions reduce visibility to less than 500 feet. • Drivers must use headlights whenever windshield wipers are in use. • Motorists are prohibited from allowing a vehicle with a gasoline-fueled motor to idle for more than three consecutive minutes. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • If an emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a freeway with its flashing lights on, the driver must change lanes, safety and traffic conditions permitting, into a lane not adjacent to the authorized vehicle. If it is not possible to change lanes, the driver must reduce their speed to a reasonably safe speed and be prepared to stop. • On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic shall yield to the right, clear of any intersection, and shall stop.
