If it is not possible to change lanes, the driver must reduce their speed and be prepared to stop. Sharing the Road with School Buses – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • Drivers must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, regardless of the direction of approach. • Stopping is not required if the bus is on a separate roadway divided by a physical barrier. Sharing the Road with Pedestrians – Participant Guidebook Page 85 • Drivers must stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk if the pedestrian is in their half of the roadway or within one lane of their half. • When turning right, drivers must stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk if the pedestrians are in their half of the roadway or within one lane of their half. • When pulling out on to the road, a driver must stop before they cross a sidewalk, even if there are no pedestrians. • If a pedestrian is using a white cane, this indicates that they are blind. They have the right-of-way. Crashes (Crash Reporting) – Participant Guidebook Page 86 • Accidents resulting in injury, death, or property damage must be reported to the police. • The deadline to file a report is 15 days. Collisions with Deer and Other Animals – Participant Guidebook Page 87 • If a driver strikes a domestic animal, they must notify the police immediately. Police and Traffic Stops – Participant Guidebook Page 89 • Officers must have probable cause (observed traffic violation) or reasonable suspicion (criminal activity) to initiate a stop.
