Safe Following Distance - Participant Guidebook Page 64 • Drivers shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway. Delaware recommends a three second following distance under optimum conditions, but suggests increasing to a four second following distance if a situation warrants, i.e. slippery roads, limited visibility, when approaching a railroad crossing or being passed, when following emergency vehicles or motorcycles, when drivers of vehicles in front of you cannot see your vehicle, when driving a large or heavily-loaded vehicle, when driving a vehicle towing another vehicle. Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Drivers making a left turn from a one-way street onto another one-way street must turn into the extreme left-hand lane available. • Drivers must use turn signals to signal their intention to turn at least 300 feet from the beginning of the turn. • Drivers making right turns must do so as close as practicable to the right-hand curb. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers may not make a U-turn when the vehicle cannot be seen by a driver from either direction at 500 feet. • Drivers may not make a U-turn unless such movement can be made safely and without interfering with other traffic. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers merging onto or across a lane shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle approaching on the highway. • Drivers of a vehicle entering a roadway shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching on the roadway that constitute a hazard. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • Applicants 80 years of age and older need only show proof of their age to obtain a handicapped placard. • A person can qualify by showing an inability to walk 200 feet without stopping for rest or an inability to walk without the assistance of a brace, cane, prosthetic device, wheelchair, other person, crutch, or other assistive device. • Qualified drivers may park in designated persons with disabilities spaces while displaying a valid parking placard or license plate.
