During a Traction Law situation, all motorists are required to have EITHER: o 4WD or AWD vehicle and 3/16" tread depth o Tires with a mud and snow designation (M+S icon) and 3/16" tread depth o Winter tires (mountain-snowflake icon) and 3/16" tread depth o Tires with an all-weather rating by the manufacturer and 3/16" tread depth o Chains or an approved alternative traction device • Passenger Vehicle Chain Law - Every vehicle on the roadway must have chains or an alternative device, such as "AutoSock". • Drivers may use tire chains of reasonable proportions when required for safety due to snow or ice. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • Drivers must yield the right-of-way to all emergency vehicles using a siren, air horn, and/or flashing red, blue or white lights. Where possible, drivers must pull over to the right edge of the road. If the driver is in an intersection, they must drive through the intersection before pulling over. • On a roadway with two or more lanes traveling in the same direction, drivers approaching an emergency vehicle that has stopped along the side of the road, must leave at least one lane between the driver's vehicle and the emergency vehicle by changing lanes, unless directed otherwise by a police officer or emergency personnel or conditions prohibit the lane change. • If the road only has one lane, or the driver cannot change lanes, drivers must slow down to a safe speed and use due care and caution as they pass. • A driver who is overtaking an emergency vehicle, tow vehicle, or public utility vehicle that is parked on the side of the road must reduce speed to 25 miles per hour if the speed limit is less than 45 miles per hour; or at least 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit if the speed limit is 45 miles per hour or more. Drivers are not required to stop if on the opposite side of a highway divided by a median or barrier. • Drivers must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus when its flashing red lights are active.
