Page 2 of 3 AARP Driver Safety Smart Driver™ Course State-Specific Information D20688 – March 2026NEW IDAHO Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Drivers must use their turn signal at least 100 feet before making a turn or five seconds on freeways (interstates) before turning or changing lanes. • Shared center turn lanes are to be used for left turns only; they are not to be used as travel lanes. • When turning left from a two-way street on to a one-way street, drivers must turn into the most extreme left-hand lane available. • It is legal to turn on red from the inside lane of multiple right turn lanes if it is safe to do so and there are no signs prohibiting. • It is illegal to make right turn on a solid red arrow. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers may not make a U-turn when the vehicle cannot be seen by a driver from either direction at a distance of 500 feet. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drivers must yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching on the highway to be entered or crossed. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • Persons with disabilities may apply for special parking placards or special license plates which allow those persons with disabilities to park in designated parking spaces. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 • Drivers are required to use their headlights during the day when visibility is 500 feet or less. • Studded tires may only be used from October 1 to April 30. Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic shall yield to the right, clear of any intersection, and shall stop. • If an emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a freeway (interstate) with its flashing lights on, the driver must reduce speed to below the posted speed limit and move to the middle or left lane. If it is not possible to change lanes, the driver must reduce their speed and be prepared to stop. Sharing the Road with School Buses – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • The driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking a school bus is not permitted to pass the school bus with flashing red lights. However, oncoming traffic on a highway of more than three (3) lanes is not required to stop when passing a school bus.
