Page 2 of 4 AARP Driver Safety Smart Driver™ Course State-Specific Information D20686 – October 2025 GEORGIA Safe Following Distance - Participant Guidebook Page 64 • A safe following distance must be reasonable and prudent. This means adjusting your speed to the weather conditions, surrounding traffic, condition of the road, and the speed of the vehicle you are following on a street or highway. Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 • Drivers must use a turn signal at a reasonable time and distance before turning. • When making a left-hand turn from a two-way street to a one way street (two lanes), drivers must turn in to the most extreme left-hand lane available. • It is legal to turn from the inside lane of multiple right turn lanes if safe to do so and there are no signs prohibiting. • It is illegal to make a right turn on a solid red arrow. • It is legal to make a turn from a one-way street to another one-way street on a red light. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 • Drivers making right turns, on a red light, must yield to drivers making legal U-turns into the lane they are planning to turn. • Drivers may make U-turns on green arrows at any intersection, unless there is a No U-Turn sign at the intersection. • Do not make a U-turn on a curve or a hill if you cannot be seen by drivers approaching from the other direction. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 • Drives must yield the right-of-way to traffic on another roadway that pose an immediate hazard. • Drivers must adjust their speed and vehicle position to merge into new lanes safely. • On multiple lane roads, a driver must not impede the flow of traffic. They must move to the right lane and let faster-moving traffic proceed in the left lane. Handicapped Parking – Participant Guidebook Page 74 • No person shall park a vehicle so as to block any entrance or exit ramp used by persons with disabilities. • No person shall park a vehicle in a parking place for persons with disabilities unless there is a valid parking permit displayed. • If the driver is not handicapped, and the driver is the only one exiting the vehicle, the driver may not park in a handicapped space. Driving in Rain, Snow, Fog, Smoke, Dust and Other Conditions – Participant Guidebook Page 75-77 • Headlights (not daytime running lights) must be used when there is bad weather or when visibility falls below 500 feet. • Do not drive with hazards or parking lights on.
