This means adjusting your speed to the surrounding traffic, condition of the road and speed of the vehicle you are following. Oregon recommends a two to four-second following distance, depending on the driver's speed. Turning at Intersections - Participant Guidebook Page 68 Drivers must use their turn signal at least 100 feet before making a turn. An officer can ticket a driver for waiting to turn left in an intersection if they are obstructing traffic. When turning left from a two-way street on to a one-way street (two lanes), drivers must turn into the most extreme left-hand lane available. U-Turns – Participant Guidebook Page 69 Drivers may not make a U-turn where the vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of another vehicle approaching in either direction at a distance of 500 feet within the incorporated limits of a city or 1,000 feet outside a city. Merging – Participant Guidebook Page 70 Drivers shall always yield the right-of-way to vehicles which are already on the freeway or other arterial highway in which the driver is merging onto. Only persons displaying a valid parking placard or special license plate may park in designated spaces for persons with disabilities. If an emergency vehicle is stopped on the shoulder of a freeway with its flashing lights on, the driver must move one lane away from the activity. If it is not possible to change lanes, the driver must reduce their speed at least 5 miles per hour under the speed limit and be prepared to stop. It is illegal for drivers to enter a roundabout if there is an emergency vehicle approaching. It is illegal to follow an emergency vehicle within 500 feet if its lights and siren are on.
