Page 3 of 4 AARP Driver Safety Smart Driver™ Course State-Specific Information D20678 – December 2023 ARIZONA Sharing the Road with Emergency Vehicles – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • On any undivided highway on which an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and siren on, all traffic shall yield to the right, clear of any intersection, and shall stop. • If any stationary vehicle is stopped on the side of the road and is giving a signal by displaying alternately flashing lights or is displaying warning lights, the driver must move over to a lane not adjacent to the stopped vehicle if safe to do so. If it is not possible to change lanes, the driver must reduce their speed and proceed with caution. • It is against the law to follow within 500 feet behind a fire truck with a siren or flashing lights on. Drivers must stay behind at least 300 feet behind other emergency vehicles. • It is illegal to drive or park within a block where a fire truck has stopped to respond to a fire alarm. Sharing the Road with School Buses – Participant Guidebook Page 82 • The driver of a vehicle behind a school bus is required to stop for a school bus that has its red lights flashing. The driver must remain stopped until the school bus moves ahead or until the stop-sign arm and flashing lights are no longer shown. • The driver of a vehicle following or approaching a school bus is required to stop before reaching the school bus if the school bus stops and displays it's stop-sign arm and flashing lights. The driver must also not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or the signal and alternately flashing lights are no longer shown. Sharing the Road with Motorcycles – Participant Guidebook Page 83 • It is illegal to share the lane with a motorcycle. • Motorcyclists are entitled to the full use of a lane and drivers shall not deprive motorcyclists from the full use of the lane. • Lanes may be filtered by motorcycles under specific conditions. (1) When the posted speed limit does not exceed 45 miles per hour. (2) When the motorcycle is not traveling faster than 15 miles per hour when filtering. (3) When vehicles are stopped. (4) The street is divided into at least two adjacent lanes in the same direction of travel. Sharing the Road with Bicycles – Participant Guidebook Page 84 • When passing a bicyclist, the driver must keep at least 3 feet between them and the bike. • If a driver makes a right turn while a cyclist is on their right, they must yield the right-of-way to the cyclist. • If a cyclist reaches an intersection before the driver, the driver must yield the right-of-way and let them cross. Sharing the Road with Pedestrians – Participant Guidebook Page 85 • If a pedestrian is entering a crosswalk, the driver must yield by stopping or slowing down. • If a driver is making a right turn while a pedestrian is in the crosswalk, they must yield to the pedestrian. • When pulling out on to the road, a driver must stop before the cross a sidewalk, even if there are no pedestrians.
