Pedestrians Pedestrian fatalities are on the rise. Drivers have a responsibility to ensure that people walking on and near roadways remain safe. The rule here is simple: Always check the roadway carefully for pedestrians crossing your intended route. Especially at intersections, pedestrians may incorrectly assume that, because they can see your vehicle, you can see them and you will stop. This assumption could prove dangerous. Here are a few more pedestrian-safety pointers to keep in mind: X Do not pass a vehicle that has stopped in the roadway until you confirm the reason. They may be stopping to allow pedestrians to cross the road. X When making turns, you may not see a pedestrian hidden by the corner pillars between your windshield and side windows. This is a frequent blind spot in vehicles. Scan and turn your head to see around these areas framing your windshield. X Be sure to watch for pedestrians, especially children, darting out midblock from between parked vehicles. X Look for pedestrian crossing signals and signs, which require vehicles to stop midblock for pedestrian crosswalks. X At a stop light, check to make sure no pedestrians are crossing in your path before you proceed. X Be especially alert for pedestrians and children when backing out of driveways or parking spaces. Always look over your shoulder, check your rearview mirror, and watch your backup camera if you have one, for people crossing behind your vehicle. X Use extra caution when driving in hard-to-see conditions, such as nighttime or bad weather. X Be aware that pedestrians may be distracted by their cellphone or their headphones and may not convey their intentions to drivers.
