FATALITY RATES
Over the past 20 years for drivers 70 and over,
fatal crash rates per licensed driver fell more
than 40% compared to a decline of more than
20% for drivers ages 35–54.
Though they are healthier than ever, drivers 70+
are still more fragile than younger people, so if
they do crash, they are more likely to experience
serious injury than drivers ages 35–54.
According to the IIHS, older adults hold onto their
vehicles longer, which means it takes longer for
them to reap the benefits of safety advancements.
But that also means we are likely to see survival
rates continue to improve as advancements work
their way into the vehicles older drivers are driving.

CRASH FREQUENCY
Fatal crash frequency involvements rise as
drivers age. Older drivers share common
challenges that lead to crashes, including difficulty
merging, failing to yield the right-of-way, and
making left turns at intersections.
While such statistics, as those featured in the
graphic, are alarming, they also alert us to our
most troublesome driving situations and where
we may need to focus to reduce the chance
of a crash.
FATALITIES ARE RISING AS OUR PHYSICAL FRAGILITY INCREASES.
