CROSSING SOLID LINES IS ALLOWED WHEN TURNING INTO DRIVEWAYS, IF SAFE TO DO SO AND PERMITTED IN YOUR STATE. TRAVEL LANE MARKINGS Pavement Markings WHITE LANE markings separate lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction or shoulder boundaries. Remember: X Broken white lane markings separate lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction, or shoulder boundaries. X Crossing a single, solid white line is discouraged. X Crossing double white lines is prohibited. YELLOW LANE markings are used to identify lanes of traffic traveling in opposite directions. X Broken lines mean you are permitted to change lanes or pass when it is safe to do so. X Crossing double solid yellow lines is prohibited. X Double yellow lines: one solid, one broken: A solid yellow line to the right of a broken yellow center line means passing or crossing is prohibited in that lane, except when turning left. If the broken line is closer to your vehicle, you can cross the broken line only to pass another vehicle and only when it is safe to do so. Lane/Line Markings Passing Both Directions X Passing is permitted when safe to do so. Do not try to pass on a hill or on a blind curve. Passing Prohibited X Passing is prohibited from both directions. Crossing the centerline is permitted only to turn into driveways, when permitted in your state.
