CHECKING YOUR VEHICLE BEFORE YOU DRIVE Vehicle Operation and Maintenance Even the safest drivers are no match for a vehicle in poor condition, which increases the risk of breakdowns and crashes. Regular maintenance is essential for improving your safety, the safety of others, and the environment by way of reduced pollution. You will also feel the benefits in your bank account, since regular vehicle maintenance lowers the operating costs and reduces the likelihood of costly repairs. Owner's Manual To best understand your vehicle's operation and maintenance requirements, read your owner's manual. If you do not have an owner's manual in your vehicle, you should be able to find it online. The owner's manual comes with your vehicle and provides basic information on vehicle features and maintenance. Your vehicle owner's manual should have information about: X How to adjust your vehicle seats, mirrors, and steering wheel X Key vehicle features and how they work X Tires X Child restraint systems X Maintenance schedules Brakes If you notice any abnormal sounds, have your brakes checked by a professional. Lights Periodically check that your headlights, brake lights, taillights, turn signals, emergency flashers, and interior lights are clean and working properly. X Make sure your lights are free from mud or dirt that can obscure them. X Have them checked for oxidation (cloudiness) and have it removed. X Check headlight alignment by shining them against a flat surface such as a wall or garage door to see if they are aimed at the same level. Fluid Levels Today, many vehicles have lights indicating if fluid levels are low. Pay close attention to which lights are showing up on your dashboard and what they indicate. More tips to remember: X Always make sure you have sufficient fuel. X Brake, power steering, coolant levels, and windshield washer fluids should be checked regularly. X Oil and transmission fluid should be checked and changed regularly, based on the miles indicated in the owner's manual. X Make sure each reservoir is full and if you see any sign of fluid leakage like drip spots under your vehicle, take your vehicle to a professional to be serviced. www.aarp.org/drive Smart Driver Participant Guidebook 33 ARE WE READY TO DRIVE? 3 1 2 3 5 6 4
