AARP 2 SEATING POSITION When you are seated in the vehicle, it is important to ask the following questions. Can you: 1. REACH THE PEDALS? Adjust the seat bottom backward or forward until you can press the brake pedal firmly to a stop but still maintain a slight bend in your leg. 2. REACH THE STEERING WHEEL? Adjust the seat back backward or forward until you can reach the wheel with a slight bend in your elbows. There should be at least 10" between the wheel and your sternum. 3. SEE OUT OF THE VEHICLE WITH A CLEAR LINE OF SIGHT? Adjust the seat height so that your line of sight is at least three inches above the steering wheel. 4. SEE THE IMPORTANT DIALS/DATA ON THE DASHBOARD? The steering wheel may have to be adjusted up or down and closer or farther from you. 5. WEAR THE SEAT BELT COMFORTABLY? Raise or lower the upper belt attachment point for better fit and comfort. 6. PLACE YOUR HEAD ON THE RESTRAINT CENTERED AT THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD? Adjust the head restraint vertically if needed. You should repeat these steps in the listed order to make sure you have the best overall fit. In addition, there are aftermarket devices that may make you feel more comfortable in the driver's seat, but any aftermarket devices may alter the vehicle safety design. When considering any assistive devices, it is always wise to consult with an occupational therapist or driver rehabilitation specialist. MIRROR ADJUSTMENT Vehicle Location Position your vehicle in an open area, even a parking lot, where you are out of the way of other traffic. In the distance to the rear of the vehicle there might be stationary items, such as other vehicles, buildings or trees. These objects should be visible in all three mirrors. Seating Position While Adjusting Mirrors After your driver's seat is properly adjusted and you are sitting straight in your normal driving position, you are ready to adjust your mirrors. With a helper, use these steps to reduce blind spots/zones: Rearview Mirror Adjustment X Have your helper stand two steps to the left of your vehicle and about three to four steps behind the rear of the vehicle. X Center the rearview mirror so that your helper is just visible in the left edge of the rearview mirror. Le Mirror Adjustment Adjust the left side mirror so you can just see the helper on the inside (right) edge of the mirror. Right Mirror Adjustment X Without moving the rearview mirror, have your helper move to the right (passenger side) of your vehicle until you can just see the helper in the right edge of the rearview mirror. Have the helper stop there. X Now adjust the right side mirror so you can just see the helper on the inside (left) edge of the mirror. As a final check, have your helper stand about 10 feet behind your vehicle's rear fender in the center and walk to the left and then to the right. Notice when they disappear from view. Those are the edges of your field of view with your mirrors. Beyond that field of view are your blind spots. You will need to turn your head to see what is there. If you use this method, the only blind spots may be directly off the rear fenders. right view le view center view PARKING
