ASSESSING YOUR OWN DRIVING Driving fitness can vary from day to day. This may be the result of medications, stress, fatigue, weather conditions (and how one responds to them), time of day for a planned trip, and other factors. You, more than any other individual or circumstance, should determine how safe you will be. Assessing Your Own Skills There are several ways you can test or assess your skills, including do-it-yourself programs using online or print resources. These publications, questionnaires, and quizzes are an important first step to determine if you need to take action to improve your skills. Some of these self-assessment booklets and programs include checklists of driving skills and situations. It may help to have a relative or friend ride with you and help you complete the checklist. To better assess your own skills, complete the Activity: Judging Your Own Driving in Resources. What Matters Most is Staying Safe The number of drivers age 70+ is growing, and that is a great thing. Older drivers are keeping their licenses longer and, as was mentioned in Unit 1, are involved in fewer fatal collisions than in the past. To keep this positive trend going, it is imperative that we periodically assess our driving, keeping in mind that our physical, cognitive, and visual abilities may decline as we age. To stay safe and to keep others safe, many older drivers choose to limit their driving—at night, during inclement weather, on the highway, and other situations where they feel less confident. Many use other transportation options to stay mobile. Making the appropriate adjustments to your driving is the smart thing to do. You are primarily responsible for three distinct aspects of your driving safety: X Your physical and mental readiness to drive. X Your choices about your vehicle's safety features and maintenance. X Your decisions about how, when, where, and with whom you drive. AARP DRIVER SAFETY 100 WHAT DOES THE ROAD AHEAD LOOK LIKE? 5 1 2 3 4 5 6
