OPTION DESCRIPTION COST INFORMATION PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION (MASS TRANSIT) AND PARATRANSIT SERVICES Many people like the affordability and convenience of public transportation, like buses and subways. These services generally pick up and drop off passengers at designated stops and destinations on a specified schedule. Paratransit services, o en referred to as Dial- a-Ride, Handy-Vans, or Elderly and Disabled Transportation Services, are usually provided by public transit agencies. They are especially helpful if you have a disability. Booking a ride through a paratransit service requires advance planning. Some providers may require you to complete an application or pass an assessment to qualify for service, which can take several weeks. These services may also offer free, hands-on "Travel Training" to help you learn to travel safely and independently within the public transit system. You pay for each trip. There may be discounts for seniors, veterans, or those with disabilities. Sometimes you can get discounts by purchasing special passes. For paratransit sponsored by a public transit agency, you may pay a reduced price. Other service providers may operate on a donation basis. Some health insurance providers or Medicare plans may offer reimbursement for some or all of your transportation costs. RIDESHARING Services like Uber and Ly allow you to book rides through a mobile app by connecting you directly with a driver. You can request rides whenever you need them. You pay for each trip, but you know the full cost upfront before booking the ride. The apps link to a bank or credit card to automatically pay, so you do not need cash. Circumstances such as inclement weather, peak hours, and high demand may impact the cost of the trip. This is called surge pricing. TAXIS OR CAR SERVICES These private curb-to-curb services offer flexible scheduling with per-ride charges that may include booking fees, per-mile fees, and wait-time fees. You pay for each trip, usually by distance or time. Some services allow you to set up pre- funded accounts or may offer discounts for older users. Many older adults may perceive these services as expensive or a luxury, but they can still cost much less than owning and maintaining a vehicle. Some taxi or car services may be willing to set up accounts that allow other family members to pay for services. Budget permitting, some people might want to hire their own driver. WALKING AND BIKING For short trips in your community, consider walking or bicycling. Both are good for your health. For walking, your trip is free! Biking is also free if you own a bike and gear. If you participate in a bikeshare service, you may be able to pay by the ride, but some services may require a membership or subscription. Some plans may offer discounts. www.aarp.org/drive Smart Driver Participant Guidebook 95 WHAT DOES THE ROAD AHEAD LOOK LIKE? 5 1 2 3 4 5 6
