OPTION DESCRIPTION COST INFORMATION AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES (AV) Commonly referred to as self-driving vehicles, AVs are not yet widely available, but some communities are seeing positive results with AV shuttle services in controlled routes and rideshare service tests. Typically, a person still sits in the driver's seat to monitor the vehicle's operation and take control if necessary. Cost varies but, in many of the communities testing AV shuttles, the rides may be free or very inexpensive to entice ridership. You may need to apply to be part of a pilot program, meet certain eligibility requirements, and agree to submit feedback in exchange for using the service. If the autonomous vehicle is part of a rideshare service fleet, the cost is typically the same as a regular trip with a driver. CARSHARING You still do the driving in this membership- based transportation model, but you rent the car from someone else for short periods of time. Some services may own a fleet of vehicles available at set locations. Others connect you to private car owners who want to rent their vehicle when not in use. O en, your fees include the minimum level of insurance your state requires, but still check the fine print to be sure you are covered. Usually you need a membership or subscription and each trip is charged by time or mileage. Whether or not you have to pay for fuel depends on the service's options and the plan for which you sign up. If you do not drive o en, joining a service like this could save you hundreds of dollars annually compared to owning a vehicle. FAMILY AND FRIENDS The most common alternative to driving is getting rides from family members and friends. While it is the most familiar and comfortable option, you may have conflicting feelings about inconveniencing others. Chances are, you will find people who are more than willing to help. You generally do not have any direct costs, but you may offer to help pay for gas or "barter" by offering to babysit, for example. If you feel you should do something else in exchange for the ride, consider treating your ride provider to dinner or maybe a homemade dessert. Simple gestures go a long way! LOCAL SERVICE PROGRAMS In some communities, faith-based or non- profit organizations sponsor ride programs for older adults. Many programs use volunteer drivers, offer rides for free or at a very low cost, and they appreciate donations. MOBILITY AS A SERVICE (MAAS) AND MOBILITY ON DEMAND (MOD) SOLUTIONS These solutions integrate a variety of options within a single service typically accessible through a mobile app or online platform. The MaaS/MoD technology, which serves as an end-to-end trip planner, allows you to find local transportation options, schedule preferred mode(s) of transportation, and pay for the trip all in one central location. You can mix and match the options that work for you based on your needs and where you're going. You pay based on the price set by each individual transportation provider. Some providers, such as public transit or volunteer drivers, are likely to charge less than a private one. PRIVATE ORGANIZATIONS OR BUSINESS SHUTTLES Adult day centers, sheltered workshops, housing programs, and stores, malls, or other businesses may offer their own transportation for program participants or customers. Generally, these rides are free. AARP DRIVER SAFETY 94 WHAT DOES THE ROAD AHEAD LOOK LIKE? 5 1 2 3 4 5 6
