MORE THAN 90% OF CRASHES ARE PREVENTABLE! AGE FATAL CRASH RATES PER 100 MILLION MILES TRAVELED 80+ FATALITY RATES Over the past 20 years for drivers 70 and over, fatal crash rates per licensed driver fell more than 40% compared to a decline of more than 20% for drivers ages 35–54. Though they are healthier than ever, drivers 70+ are still more fragile than younger people, so if they do crash, they are more likely to experience serious injury than drivers ages 35–54. According to the IIHS, older adults hold onto their vehicles longer, which means it takes longer for them to reap the benefits of safety advancements. But that also means we are likely to see survival rates continue to improve as advancements work their way into the vehicles older drivers are driving. Older drivers share common challenges that lead to crashes, including difficulty merging, failing to yield the right-of-way, and making left turns at intersections. While such statistics, as those featured in the graphic, are alarming, they also alert us to our most troublesome driving situations and where we may need to focus to reduce the chance of a crash.
