Be Aware of Changes It is important to remember that we may undergo the following changes as we age: X Increased fragility in drivers 70+. If you do crash, you are more likely to experience serious injury than drivers ages 35–54. X Vision problems. This includes reduced ability to see signs or objects in dim light, reduced ability to judge the speed and distance of other vehicles, and a greater sensitivity to glare. X Hearing problems. These interfere with recognizing potential danger signals. X Increases in reaction time. Rapid reaction time is needed to react to unexpected situations. X Loss of muscular strength and flexibility, especially in the neck, legs, and feet. This leads to a loss of balance and stability, affecting our ability to operate the vehicle. X More frequent use of multiple medications. This can lead to drug interactions that sometimes cause side effects such as blurred vision, confusion, inability to concentrate, drowsiness, dizziness, or weakness. X Increased side effects of medical conditions. These can interfere with basic driving skills. X Gaps in awareness. The inability to concentrate, momentarily falling asleep, inability to remember places and tasks, or getting lost on familiar routes impacts the ability to drive.
